Among those interested in hiding or unearthing or preserving or destroying the chest are agents of Great Britain, Israel, Austria, Russia, Czechoslovakia (I think), Rumania (I guess), the United States, and some unspecified band of neo- Nazis. In addition, there are double agents and would- be agents—and before the film is into its second half hour, virtually the only interest left lies in figuring out what great power each new inexplicable character is working for, or hoping he might work for, or wishing he could go home and forget. Katzin's direction responds to all this with a program of cross- cutting at times so extensive that you have to strain to remember that every new and disorienting crisis really does connect with part of the action—last visited maybe 1. This does not build excitement; it merely eliminates continuity. But this seems reasonable from a director who in a major sequence can place two men riding toward each other on a mountainside chair lift, one an assassin, the other his intended victim; and by the time they meet, can dissolve all the situation's inherent tension merely by the ineptness of his photography and editing.
